Meet Broad Ripple Theatre's Newest Teacher

By: Cierra Robinson | Photos By: Destini Pollard and Iyana Johnson

Elijah Jellison is the new theatre teacher at Broad Ripple Magnet High School. Jellison describes himself as "creative, squirrelly, patient, nerdy and ambitious."

Outside of the classroom, the interests he pursues are reading and playing video games. Jellison is currently reading the "Great Tree of Avalon" series.

Jellison describes his teaching style as pretty laid back. He also believes that the qualities of an excellent teacher involve "patience and willingness to work with students individually."

Jellison also opened up about his experience being a substitute teacher. He says, "I was a substitute in Florida for a short period of time, and of course how all kids are when there’s a sub, they thought they could clown. But I quickly shut it down and my class realized they couldn’t do whatever they wanted in my class."

Jellison also says, "If a student misses my classes regularly, I would make sure they have make up work, but I hope they wouldn’t miss my class too often!"

When asked where he sees himself in five years, Jellison says, "I'’d still love to be working at Broad Ripple.”

Rockets Watch the Super Bowl

By: Tra'Chelle McKinney

The Super Bowl 51 was the first time a Super Bowl game went into overtime. The teams who played were the Atlanta Falcons (11-5) and the returning champs, New England Patriots (14-2).

Broad Ripple Seniors, Thomas Adams and Junior Caleb Adams, were asked about the Super Bowl and who they thought was going to win. Caleb said, “Falcons, because they had a huge lead at half.” We found that most people, while they were watching the game, thought the same thing as Caleb.

However, Thomas Adams had a totally different view on the outcome of the game. He said, “The Patriots, due to the fact that Tom Brady is an amazing quarterback (QB) and I thought they had a better will to win.”

In response to the half-time score of the game, Thomas added, “For a second it seemed as if the Falcons had the advantage,” and Caleb responded, “I'm surprised that the Pats made a comeback since they were down by so much.”

However, being an Indianapolis native, Caleb said, “I wish the Colts would have won because that's my hometown team.” Thomas would have rather seen the Panthers or the Seahawks win because, “those are my favorite teams.”

Hndrxx Album Drops, Students Listen

By: Kenyon Tobin

Hndrxx, the sixth studio album made by Hip-hop/rap artist Future just dropped. On February 24, 2017, Hndrxx was released and includes 17 songs. The top three most popular songs are “Selfish”, “Incredible”, and “Solo.”

“Selfish,” featuring Rihanna, is a major hit. Not one collaboration between the two of them has failed. Both of their vocals tell a story of two people trying to look for love and focus on each other, rather than the world.

“Incredible,” is already a radio hit. On this track, Future uses his voice as an instrument on the beat. Its one of those catchy songs that will have you singing it all day.

“Solo," is a song in which many people believe Future is singing to his ex-girlfriend and baby’s mom, Ciara. His lyrics sound like he’s "in his feelings" about her.

Hndrxx is an album to not be skipped.

Bored this weekend? Get out of your house and see Get Out.

By: Chelena Meadows

The new movie, Get Out is a thriller/horror film, directed by Jordan Peele. It’s only 1 hour and 44 minutes long and is playing in your local theatres. The movie came out February 24, 2017 and IMDb rated it 8.3/10. The Rotten Tomatoes rated it a 99%.

Now that main characters, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend with her family. At first, Chris thinks the family's accommodating behavior was a nervous attempts to deal with the interracial relationship. But as the weekend progresses, a series of disturbing events lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

Peter Debruge, from Variety says, “Blending race-savvy satire with horror to especially potent effect, this bombshell social critique from first-time director Jordan Peele proves positively fearless — which is not at all the same thing as scareless.”
